SystemSmart has successfully completed a comprehensive overhaul of the electrical installation on six icebreakers owned by the State Water Company Wody Polskie. The project covered five L-1000-type units and one L-401 unit. Each of the icebreakers, Walrus, Buffalo, Bear, Cheetah, Jaguar and Lion, underwent thorough modernisation, which ensured they were not only operationally efficient, but also compliant with modern maritime safety standards.
Scope of work
Replacement of safety systems
The core element of the implementation was the supply and replacement of nearly 3,000 electrical installation protection systems. All new components were supplied with the necessary marine certificates, ensuring compliance with the highest maritime safety standards.
Upgrading the on-board installation
As part of the refurbishment, the entire deck electrical system was replaced. The work also included the restoration of deck lighting and navigational lighting, which is crucial for the safety of navigation and working on ships in difficult ice conditions.
Maintenance of electrical equipment
Our company has also inspected and maintained the electrical equipment on all icebreakers. As a result, these critical components for the ships’ operations are now fully operational and ready for use.
Supply and installation of batteries
We completed the supply and installation of four new batteries in the lighting system of each icebreaker, ensuring power supply reliability even in the harshest conditions.
Replacement of supply switchboards
As part of the upgrade, we have replaced the four switchboards that power the icebreakers from shore, complete with new 63A/4P plugs. These electrical components are key to ensuring that ships are properly powered while in port.
Insulation measurement
To ensure complete safety, we carried out insulation condition measurements of the installation and electrical equipment before and after the refurbishment. This gives us confidence that the entire installation is operating in accordance with standards and is safe to use.
Recovery of control systems
In addition to the work on the electrical installation, we also took care to restore the operability of the main engine speed control pneumatic system and the propeller speed control system. These components are key to the operational efficiency of the icebreakers during icebreaking operations.
